The SA Omnium Track Championship held over the past two days in Cape Town did not disappoint. The best track riders from all over South Africa converged to show their best to ultimately crown our national champions.

The Omnium, from Latin meaning “of all” or “belonging to all” is a multiple race event in track cycling featuring a Scratch race, Individual pursuit, Elimination race, Time trial, the Flying lap and the ever exciting, and sometimes confusing to follow, Points race.
This year saw contestants in categories elite men, open ladies, junior boys and girls, vets and masters men and u/16 boys and girls.
Having led the completion from the start Nolan Hoffman (Team Abantu) was again crowned the national champion. In a well-deserved second place was team mate Morné van Niekerk, who was the only rider to lap the field twice during their points race, securing an additional 40 points and the silver medal. Kellan Gouveris from the Eastern Cape just made the cut for the bronze medal.
Elfriede Wolfaardt remained in the lead today for the open woman’s category to ultimately walk away with the national champion jersey. She broke away from the main bunch and stayed out in front for very long before collecting the hard earned bonus points. This secured her win over Elisa Gianchino and Ilze Bole who had to settle for silver and bronze respectively.
Jessica Gerber from Oudtshoorn competed with the open ladies to be awarded the junior girls champion jersey. She is a star in the making.
The men from Bellville Cycling Club, Mark-Lister Petersen and Faizel Tomas, followed by Chrispin Fourie from TrackCyclingSA in Cape Town, took all three medals, gold, silver and bronze respectively, for the mens 35+ category.
Martin van Wyk and Bruce Viljoen, both from Gauteng, and local legend John Moss, secured the top three positions in the mens 45+ category.
Bradley Gouveris consistently performed well over all the events, an early indication of a good Omnium champion contender, to secure the junior boys champion jersey over Damean Oosthuizen and Daniyal Matthews, receiving silver and bronze respectively.
Ashley Parsons secured the u/16 girls champion jersey over Jessica Brown by one point, who were neck-and-neck for most of the competition.
The SA Track Omnium 2015, which nearly did not happen this year, was saved by a handful of small sponsors and a dedicated team of organisers and officials to ensure that our SA heroes can be crowned and securing them valuable UCI points for the elites and juniors.
