The Western Cape Road Championships were held in Velddrif on Sunday 21st January 2024. The day started off overcast, cool and no wind – how perfect was that for the competitors.
Racing started at 6h50 with the Elite and Under 23 Men racing 169km. This was followed by Elite and U23 women, junior men and veteran men, who competed over 114km route.
As the day wore on, the clouds cleared and temperatures started to rise. Competition was hot in all categories of racing, with Jaco Venter showing his class in winning the men’s elite race ahead of Carl Bonthuys and Alan Hatherly. The women’s elite race was won by Hayley Preen, who pipped Layla Schwellnus and Michaela Lubbe for the win.
The various age categories were well contested with well seasoned veterans and young scholars all performing at their peak before upcoming SA Championships. Well done to all participants.
